General anesthetic is used to render a patient completely unconscious for dental treatment. Some children are so anxious that they are unable to tolerate dentistry. Sleep dentistry is commonly used for the treatment of children with special needs, children who are exceptionally sensitive and unable to tolerate dental instruments, and children with very strong gag reflexes. General anesthesia is rendered safely by an anesthesiologist and a nurse. After treatment, the child may be uncoordinated and overly emotional, but will usually recover within a day.
